Sugar Is The New Oil - Review Of Cane

cain-1.jpg
I caught the premier of “Cane” on CBS starring Jimmy Smits. The show was hyped relentlessly by CBS and to a certain extent it lived up to it’s expectations.

At first this seemed like “Dallas 2007″ with the Ewing brothers…I mean Duque brothers fighting for control of the family business. But then a big surprise happened for me. Alex Vega ordered a hit.

I though it was kind of cool, not that I endorse hits, but maybe Cane will evolve into a gritty primetime version of “Scarface”.

The Duques own a large sugar and rum company in Florida. The head of the family is Pancho Duque. Jimmy Smits plays Alex Vega, an “adopted” of Pancho. Pancho also has a natural born son in the family business, Frank Duque.

In the premier episode the Duques are approached by a rival company to buy the Duque sugar fields so the Duque’s can “focus on the business of making rum”.

Pancho seem intrigued by the idea. However the clever Jimmy Smits finds out that the government is about release legislation that will allow companies to produce ethanol from oil.

That when Jimmy realizes why the Samuels wanted to purchase the Duque sugar fields.

Sugar is the new oil ! Kaching !

Cane debuted to a 7.5 rating which is about 12 million viewers. Those number aren’t too shabby but they’re no Americal Idol :)

Dancing With The Stars - The Men

I have to admit this years crop of men appeared a little lackluster at first. They were missing a “former teen idol” singer or television star.

Wayne Newton was a class act. I have new respect for him. I don’t think the very competitive Cheryl Burke was thrilled to have Wayne as a partner.
Floyd Mayweather lived up to the hype. The guy can move.
Helio Castroneves was another surprise. However much of the credit has to be given to his partner, Julianne Hough, and her great choreography. She was Apolo Ohno’s partner last season.

Mark Cuban was teamed up with Kym Johnson, and that’s good enough for me.

I think we’ll be saying our goodbyes to Josie Maran.

Dancing With The Stars Premier

dwts-jenny-garth.jpg
ABC’s Dancing With The Stars premiered Monday night. For this first night only the women contestants danced. Based on what I have seen so far the women look strong.

Sabrina Bryan tore up the floor with an energetic routine. She looked great and had a lot of charisma. She is the definite fron runner of the women.

Melanie Brown from “The Spice Girls” has a pretty hot body and did a solid routine.

Jennie Garth is still cute as hell and did a solid routine.

Marie Osmond did a solid performance and I can almost see her being this season’s Laila Ali. I think she will improve the most over the season.

Josie Maran - well she looked skinnier on TV than in the magazines and web.

Jane Seymour did the best foxtrot of the night. She seemed to add some grace and flair to what is otherwise a pretty boring dance.

Dancing with the Stars was easily the most watched show of the night with 13.4 rating /21 share. That’s close to 22 million viewers.

The next biggest show of the night was “CSI Miami” with close to 16 million viewers.
