Windows 7 Easy Transfer Failed Help

2010 January 5
by admin

I have 4 computers and I decided to make the jump to Windows 7 from XP. I replaced one of the old computers with a kick ass HP computer which I bough from Staples.

I installed Windows easy transfer on the existing computer and made a backup onto a Western Digital MyBook.
Transferring the files onto the Windows 7 machine went without a hitch.

On the next XP computer I was going to upgrade to Win 7 from XP. I ran easy transfer again. This time it took forever to transfer the old files. Much to my chagrin after I upgraded to Win7 I was unable to transfer back my files and settings. I was getting an error message though I don’t remember what it was. It was strange because Easy Transfer would start to go through the recovery wizard and even was able to display the accounts from the old PC. However it failed when actually starting the restore process.

I did a little research and learned the east transfer file is a USMT4 file and a tool exists to recover the mig file.

I downloaded the MIG recover tool but it was unable to read from the WD MyBook again.

When you install Windows 7 over XP it saves files in a directory called windows.old. Unfortunately I deleted this dorectory to make room on my hard drive in anticipation of using easy transfer. I was really screwed at this point. Luckily this wasn’t my main PC but I would would have missed many of the files I had on this computer.

It was back to the web to see if there was any way to undelete the windows.old directory. I know that when you delete a file it doesn’t really delete the file. The PC removes the pointer to the file and let’s the OS know it can use that space if needed on the hard drive. That’s why when discarding old PC’s you need to either destroy the hard drive with a hammer or use some sort of a wipe program.

After searching for a bit I discovered NTFS Undelete. It totally saved my ass!. I was able to recover over 60 gigs of deleted files. It did not recover everything 100% but I was able to deal with that.

I hope this helps anyone that has a problem using easy transfer.

McDonalds is Serving Eggnog Milkshakes

McDonalds has started to serve eggnog milkshakes for the 2009 holiday season. I really don’t go to McDonalds that often but for the past few weeks I was asking if they had the eggnog shakes yet. Yesterday was my lucky day and they had it. It seemed to be just as good as I remember it. Such a nice indulgence for the holidays.

UPDATE: A few days before Christmas I stopped at a McDonalds to get another eggnog shake. They said they were out. I did not try another McDonalds. I did stop by another store righ after New Years but all they had available was Coffee flavored milkshake.

The Keurig Coffee Maker

It seems like the Keurig coffee maker is everywhere this holiday season and is bound to be under a lot of trees this holiday season. Basic units sell for less than $100.

The thrifty New Englander in me is wondering what the true cost of ownership is with this system.

The ready to brew containers are called K-cups. Green Mountain K-cups are about 10$/24 k cups. That works out to be about $0.42 per cup

Apparently you can also use something called coffee pods with the a device called a pod holster that fits into the Keurig coffee machine. The price for folgers pods work out to be $0.33/cup. Maxwell House Pods are $0.40/cup.

There is also a Reusable K-Cup which allows you to use regular coffee with the Keurig system. From what I could see you use 8 grams/cup which works out to be 46 cups per 13 oz. of coffee. Coffee is about $0.30/oz so the price per cup with the reusable k-cup is $0.084/cup.

I know a few people that own this system and they really like it.

Peak foliage has hit Connecticut

It looks like this weekend we hit the peak for foliage viewing in CT. I was wondering of there was going to be much of a foliage season at all. It has been unusually cold, windy and rainy lately. Any leaves that didn’t get blown off the trees seemed to have muted colors. A little sunshine brought the landscape to life.

There’s still plenty of foliage to enjoy after the leaves fall. It’s so pretty to take a hike in a state park even after the leaves have fallen.

Anne Hathaway arrrives at ‘Late Night with Jimmy Fallon’

Anne Hathaway at NBC studios to appear on ‘Late Night with Jimmy Fallon’. I’ve given this show a few trys and Fallon still looks extremely uncomfortable on the show. I was kind of hoping he’d find some sort of a groove by now. His timing is terrible, almost like he’s never done standup before.
